We recently conducted a survey of auto parts stores that included Advance Auto Parts, Inc, AutoZone, Inc and Pep Boys. About 65% of Advance Auto Parts locations reported that parts (alternators, hoses, belts and breaks) are the biggest selling items among a range of other categories including maintenance (anti-freeze, oil, lubricants, wiper blades) and accessories (wheel covers, canopies, fashion). AutoZone, Inc. and Pep Boys locations appear to be selling significantly less parts than Advance Auto. Instead, they are garnering the majority of their sales from maintenance items. A little over half of respondents from all three stores said that locations were about as busy as they were last season. All three companies appear to be selling a similar product and services mix. We found that approximately 55% of all locations provided service as well as parts while the remaining locations offered parts only.
